How to propagate your cactus or succulent plants in water

Who doesn’t love free plants?

Try this for yourself or to create lovely personal gifts that won’t break the bank.

The technique for water propagation of cactus is pretty similar to that of other house plants. However the main difference is that you must wait for the cut side of the plant stem to completely dry and scar over before setting it in water. This takes at least a week, sometimes more depending on the weather.
You should also ensure the leaves of your succulent stay dry, or they might rot. To suspend them over water, use your germination plate. The stem will root safely in the water and the leaves or top of the cactus will stay dry.
If you prefer to start from a store-bought cactus and “convert” it for life in water, check out our instructions here.
Want to try water propagation on other types of houseplants? This way.
If you want, you can repot your cuttings in soil once they have sufficient roots, just make sure you keep the soil quite moist in the beginning and use soil specifically made for cactus and succulents. Use a pot that has proper drainage, and doesn’t leave water standing in the saucer after watering.
Cactus plants are sun-loving creatures and will get too tall and lanky if they don’t receive enough light. Set them in the spotlight!
